The Euro Cup so far
First things first: Holland is kicking it seriously along with Croatia, Spain and Portugal during this year’s Euro Cup, giving all of us a very good idea about the strength and type of game each team is willing to play this year.
After putting themselves as one of the favorites with their place in France and Sweden, Holland is expecting to have their sub-21 players that won the European Championship shinning just as bright. Holland has classified for semifinals four times already: 2004, 2000, 1992 y 1976 and was a forth finalist in 1996 only missing the 1960’s EuroCup.
Now, besides Germany, France is the only team that has won the title more than once the first time was in 1984 and a second time during the 2000 European Championship yet they are at the bottom of the C list group so far this year.
Portugal is a huge competitor; they have put lots of hope in Ronaldo, since he scored 8 goals during their past classification. Nevertheless, Spain needs to get out of those 44 years with no championship, meaning that they will fight harder than ever: they want the cup and they are out to get it, they have proved they came into the Euro cup with a very young and dynamic team. Czech Republic started quite strong, they were one of the favorites for the entire European Championship, yet their impulse was not strong enough leaving all the Czech fans craving for a real killer performance. Unfortunately, they will have to wait until the next Eurocup for that.
Croatia is the top favorite of the B group: after beating Poland 1-0, they have won a spot among the big ones of this UEFA EURO 2008. The Turkish team is also playing a very good game: following Portugal very closely on the board on the A group. Turkey is a team everyone should be following closely.
Both host countries: Austria and Switzerland are already out, which was very surprising. At this moment I have to say that my personal favorites are Holland, Portugal and Turkey, they are playing strong and hard and all their games have been a rollercoaster of amazing plays.
One of the all time favorites: Germany has been playing just as great as their past performances, yet they remain quiet on the board, I will not be surprised if they just start playing mad on the next round of the championship, they do have the tendency to show their main game when you least expect it.
Now we have to be aware that European Athletic Association announced that this year's Euro cup would be the last in its current format and they have a complete new structure for the 2009 European Championship. All these changes will be made just to make it more appealing for the fans. Let’s enjoy this one and we’ll see what kind of surprises they can come up with next year. After all, no matter what they do the European Championship is one of the soccer thrills we all expect every year.
